Our Development Band was started by band member, Jayne Scott, as a learner group for some half-dozen young players. Since she inspired the creation of the band, and as a result of the dedicated work of many, many helpers, particularly band MD Paul Fensom, the band is now a full contesting band at Fourth Section level. The current Development Band MD is Dave Johnston.
The Development Band has a very diverse membership. Beginners and improving players, both young and old, play alongside musicians of wide experience, who offer advice and guidance in a helpful and friendly atmosphere. Lessons are organised for beginners and developing players. MK Brass’ senior players turn up on a regular basis to assist and share their experience, too.
The normal entry route for membership of MK Brass is though its Development Band. The most accomplished members of the Development Band are invited to work with the senior band on a regular basis, and all members participate in our regular Brass Workshops lead by top professional players.
This development programme has been most successful in preparing several players for membership of our senior outfit where they now occupy key positions; some have also been successful in auditions for the National Children’s Brass Band, and one, Georgina Cockerill, has represented England in the European Youth Brass Band.
