Paul Fensom

(MK Brass MD: 1998-2011)

Paul started his musical career at the age of 6 taking piano lessons with Marjorie Ringham and playing cornet in the Chalk Farm Salvation Army Youth Band.

On leaving school, Paul joined the Band of Her Majesty’s Life Guards and spent six years with the band. On leaving the Life Guards, he spent the next three years playing professionally in London, before accepting a teaching post with the London Borough of Brent’s Music Service.

In 1984, Paul set up ‘Regent Brass’ to cater for young adult players who had left the educational orbit of Brent Education Authority, but wanted to keep playing. Regent Brass had a meteoric rise in the brass band world, winning the 3rd Section National Title in 1988 and becoming a Championship Section Band just 6 years after their formation.

Paul accepted the position of musical director of ‘Broseley Brass’ in 1998 and, under his leadership, Broseley Brass rose from the 3rd to the Championship Section.

Paul was appointed Head of the Brent Music Service in 1994 and over the past thirteen years has helped raise the profile of music education in all Brent schools. Paul’s teaching skills were recognised in 2004 when he was awarded ‘The Mortimer Medal’ by the Worshipful Company of Musicians for his services to brass education.

In his spare time, Paul still plays Trombone in a Blues Brothers cover band with three of his ex-pupils and enjoys the trials and tribulations of supporting Watford FC.
